Créer un jeu de rôle « crayon et papier » (RPG PnP), ça demande un temps fou, une imagination débordante, d’innombrables soirées, de la patience, de solides amis pour tester et plusieurs outils!

Je suis loin d’être un designer ou un infographiste de talent (je garde ça pour une éventuelle campagne de socio-financement), alors je me débrouille avec les outils que je découvre en fouillant un peu sur le net.

Tous les outils sont gratuits pour une utilisation commerciale, souvent OpenSource en ligne ou en version PC. La suite Microsoft Office 365 (payante) peut être aisément remplacée par la version gratuite en ligne, Google Docs ou Libre Office.

Ce sont des choix personnels. Il existe beaucoup beaucoup d’autres outils pour créer, certains payants mais beaucoup gratuits.

Le festival Montréal Joue (jeux de société)


C’est dans le cadre du Festival Montréal joue 2016 qu’a eu lieu le 27 février au centre Pierre-Charbonneau ce que je qualifierais du plus grand rassemblement de joueurs de jeux de société au Québec et peut-être même Canada. En effet, près de 1000 joueurs en même temps qui s’adonnent à une activité qui ne cesse de retrouver de la vigueur ces dernières années: les jeux de société.

Une section avait même été aménagée pour permettre aux concepteurs d’y présenter leurs prototypes. Bien placé à l’entrée de la salle offrant une excellente visibilité, c’est d’ailleurs là que nous avons pu exposer nos créations telles:

C’est ainsi que c’est déroulé la journée, avec des organisateurs très disponibles et relaxes, des participants curieux, intéressés et amusés, une salle bien remplie et des centaines et des centaines de parties de jeux tous aussi captivant les uns que les autres.

Family Game Night Revisited

At our first Designer Table last year there were about with 200 attendees for the whole event. This year, we went to ComicCon Montreal which had a record crowd of 51,000 attendees.

Let me tell you that 51,000 geeks in the same hall brings a lot of people to wonder how they can print there own game! And they came, by hundreds they came and took all of my business card, all of the TGC flyers and all of my special poker size cards specially designed for ComicCon.

A funny story: On Friday night, we sold a copy of a board game called Zombie Forever. On Sunday morning, the girl came back saying: « You remember me from Friday? ». « Yes » I replied. « I WANT MORE GAMES » she said. And she left with 4 other different games! She also got an autograph from Amelie. The Game Creator!

How to prepare yourself for a TGC Designer Table Event

I am a proud father of 2 adorable girls and husband of a wonderful wife! A couple of years ago, I started to create card games and tabletop games with my youngest daughter. Our dream became a reality when we found a company called The Game Crafter.

The Game Crafter (TGC)© is a print-on-demand game publishing service that allows anyone to create, publish, and sell games without going through a traditional game publisher. TGC was launched in July 2009, and was an immediate success. TGC currently offers games for sale in a dozen categories, ranging from educational to party games. People from around the world are using TGC to create and publish games for public sale, and for private use with their friends, families, or students.

But more importantly, TGC offers to their developers the opportunity to grow their own business by helping them to promote their games. Asides from an API and a convenient and easy to use online shop, they do have a program called « Designer Table Sponsorship« .

How to prepare yourself for a TGC Designer Table Event

First, you have to create a game (or more!). That’s probably the hardest part and it will probably be the subject of another post. So let say you have designed a game and published it on TGC.

Second, you have to find an event, a convention of some kind where you will be able to promote your game and TGC. Because yes, you will become an ambassador! That part is easy and fun because it gives you a story to tell to your potential customers. Participants will want to know how it works, if it is complicated (of course it isn’t!), etc. You will engage in a conversation where no other competitor will be able to. And you might convince some of them to buy games or create their own! Know that you are a part of a community where game designer and the publisher are in a win-win situation. What more can you want!

Of course, if at the same convention, other game designers are also part of the TGC Community don’t worry, it’s even better! You’ll be able to exchange and learn even more!

The event doesn’t have to be Comicon or Gencon! A local community event will do.

Then, you have to comply to TGC rules for a « Designer Table Sponsorship« . Honestly, it’s mainly common sense. The toughest one is that:

  • You must submit your application no later than 45 days prior to the convention, and preferably much sooner than that.

How to REALLY prepare yourself for a TGC Designer Table Event

I’ll tell you my story. My wife is a polymer clay jewelry artist (she is also a Chemical Engineer and a senior scientist)! In November 2012, she attended a craft show in Montreal, Qc. My daughter and I squatted a part of her table to display our first game « Thieves of Coins« . We weren’t very well prepared but we ordered 25 copies of it! We sold 15 and made beautiful Chirstmas gifts for the whole family and friends with the remaining games!

This year, we got ourselves our own table, just beside hers. But we did more than that. We contacted TGC to get a sponsorship. Their answer was quick and very friendly. Of course they accepted because we met all their requirements. So we received a couple of weeks before the convention:

  • Three TGC branded T-Shirts.
  • One TGC branded table cover.
  • about 100 TGC brochures.
  • Ten $5 TGC gift certificates.

We also took many actions to help us promote our event:

  • Order multiple copies of each games you created. Have all of them tested thoroughly before the event. That will also be the subject of another post.
  • Create a Facebook Event. It’s easy to invite all your « friends ». Many won’t come but you get interesting surprises sometimes!
  • Promote your Facebook Event with Facebook Ads. For 30$, I got more than 200,000 prints, 93 clics. Not bad!


  • Send invitations at work to your colleagues, your boss, even the president of your company (you never know)
  • Tweet about your event regularly (I may have failed that part, at least on the « regularly »)


  • Prepare a price list if you have more than one game. Make sure to include Shipping and Duties (if you live outside the US like me).

  • Prepare a promo sheet. It helps people to understand your game.

  • Make yourself nice business cards. It helps you connect.



  • Organize a draw. We organised a draw. 5$ a ticket. If we sell 4, we give away a game of 20$ value. If we sell 8, 2 games. If we sell 16, 2 games of 20$ and 1 game of 40$, etc. We don’t make any extra money but we may sell more games!


  • Make some Demos. We will have our own copy of each game to show to people and even play a game or two with them.



Finally, the hardest part is the waiting. Our show will be on November 16 and 17. I can’t wait to write about it and tell you how it went! From dream to reality (a story of Game Design)


It all started on a rainy day during our 2010 vacation in Quebec’s Laurentians area, Canada. My youngest daughter, she was 5 y.o. at the time, was playing alone with ordinary playing cards: flipping them, talking to the Queen, you know that kind of stuff. Then she came to me saying: « Daddy, come and play with me, I invented a game! »

An idea became a game

She explained to me me the basic rules of what would become « Thieves of Coins ». I grabbed a piece of paper and took notes as she spoke. I questionned some of the rules, helped her to find a purpose for the game. We ended up brainstorming. We found a way to start the game, to distribute the cards, what to do with the play or discard cards, give some special abilities to others and so on. I wrote down a complete set of rules. We played a couple of times and back home again with Grandma and other friends.

A whole year passed! Then, one Friday night, during supper time, I made a joke: « Hey, Imagine if you published your game! » Her eyes started sparkling and she couldn’t finish her meal. We went downstairs and looked on the Internet for a Printing Service, such as lulu.com who can print your book (if you are a writer!).

We stopped at a site called thegamecrafter.com. I must honestly say that it was exactly the kind of services we were looking for. I told my daughter that we would work on the details later on because it was already 10 PM, time for her to go to bed! As she went asleep, I tought to myself: « In what kind of mess I am now? I am not a drawing artist, I am an engineer! »

The next morning, I woke up at 7 and found my daughter in front of the computer, she had been drawing beautiful characters on Powerpoint for more than an hour! I told myself: There is something to do here!

So we sat together the rest of the morning and drew characters, cover, etc. Then we got to the fun part. I explored the Game Crafter web site. Since it was a simple card game, I chose the Poker Size Card and the tuck box Templates. I downloaded the PNG file. I used an open source drawing program called Paint.Net (it’s free and easy to use).

From PowerPoint to Paint.NET, I simply used the copy and paste feature. I use Layers a lot. Layers (in Paint.NET or Adobe Photoshop) allows you to draw on different layers, therefore you can move each object separately, use transparency (or opacity) and apply effects. etc.

The Template is very important. I use a 50% opacity to see my model with the template in the background. That way, I make sure my design fits perfectly in the model!


I wrote the rules using a card template and used the front to write the French version of the rules.

I saved all the files and used The Game Crafter Engine to build my game. It has a very intuitive interface and easy to follow steps to create a game.

Once uploaded, I placed my first order! The toughest part is the waiting. Being in Canada, it looks like it’s a far far away country but what can we do about it! Anyway, I was able to keep track of my order during production time and travel time as well! So it helped.

From dream to reality

Finally, the game arrived and my daughter was very pleased to see that her work, her idea, became a reality. The impact was immediate! Right away, she began a second, a third and a fourth game! Surely, I was there to adjust the rules in the making, to finalize the designs, to write the complete rules but the initial ideas always came from her.

In 2012, we attend a small trade show in Montreal held by Le Cercle des Fermières du Québec (Anjou) where no less than 15 games were sold! We even got the visit of our Federal Deputy for Honoré-Mercier, Ms. Paulina Ayala. We intend to expose this year again!



More games to come

We like the idea so much that we continue our journey! In only 2 years, we have expanded our collection to 8 games including 3 tabletop games. tabletop games take longer to design but offer more possibilities! So our games include more strategy. We now create booklets, boards, sophisticated rules. We even began to create Polymer Clay Pawns. And the more we create, the more fun we have!
